アルテミスIIミッションで打ち上げられた宇宙船が4月6日、地球から最も遠い地点に到達し、これまでの記録を更新した。

地球から40万6800kmの地点に到達

ミッション6日目となる4月6日の午後1時57分（米東部時間）、「オリオン」宇宙船は月面から8000km先、地球から25万2760 マイル（約40万6800km）離れた地点に到達。

地球から最も遠い距離にたどり着き、「アポロ13号」の記録を更新した。

1970年に「アポロ13号」は、地球から約24万8655マイル（約40万km）まで到達したが、今回「オリオン」は、さらに4000マイル（約6400km）も遠くへ飛行したという。

This animation shows NASA’s Artemis II mission path, a journey of nearly 685,000 miles. The crew will travel in a figure-eight trajectory, looping out from Earth, around the Moon, and back again.

「信じられない光景」

カナダ人宇宙飛行士のジェレミー・ハンセン氏は、月を通過する前、無線で次のように伝えていた。

「今、肉眼で見える月面からの景色に圧倒されています。信じられない光景です」

またNASAの宇宙飛行士であるクリスティーナ・コック氏も、月面を撮影した時について「月を見つめていると、ただただ圧倒されるような感動に包まれました」と述べていた。

長距離記録を樹立してから数時間後、「オリオン」は月の裏側を通過し、その際、通信が40分間途絶えたという。

NASA管制センターはその後、宇宙飛行士たちが月の裏側を周回した時点で、乗組員との通信が回復したと発表。「オリオン」が「地球への帰還の旅を始めた」と述べた。

NASAのリード・ワイズマン氏、ビクター・グローバー氏も合わせた4人の宇宙飛行士は、月の裏側を周った後、4月10日には地球へ到着する予定となっている。（了）
