The rare black rhino is being returned to the nation of Chad. The last wild rhino was seen in this central African country in the 1970's after decades of poaching drove them to local extinction. In a historic move to aid in the long-term survival of this endangered and heavily threatened species, up to six black rhinos are being reintroduced from South Africa to Chad in May of 2018 bringing this animal back to the country for the first time in over four decades. The translocation is an extraordinary cross-collaboration between the South African Department of Environmental Affairs, the Government of the Republic of Chad, as well as African Parks and South African National Park (South African National Parks). The remarkable journey to restore rhinos to Rwanda

Watch now: Did you know, after a decade-long absence, we returned rhinos back to Akagera National Park in Rwanda (Friends of Akagera National Park) in 2017? As few as 5,500 black rhinos remain in Africa as a result of poaching, of those only 1,000 are Eastern black rhinos – making these rhinos incredibly rare. In 2017, we reintroduced 18 black rhinos from South Africa, returning the species back to Rwanda. Just three months after they were relased into Akagera, one had a calf, the first wild rhino to be born in the country in over a decade. After years of poaching, we assumed management of Akagera in 2010, and our rangers got to work overhauling law enforcement, and essentially eliminated poaching in the park – making it safe for the rhinos to return. This team is working with a dedicated canine anti-poaching unit, supported by a helicopter for aerial surveillance along with other specific security measures to ensure for all the wildlife’s ongoing protection. Rhinos returning to Rwanda was a key moment for Akagera in 2017, bringing hope to conservation and for a species around the globe. We look forward to bringing you more moments like these in 2018.
