熱波に襲われたオーストラリアで、コアラが通りかかったサイクリストの水を飲む場面が撮影された。

自転車に近寄り、水を飲み始めた

女性サイクリストのAnna Heuslerさんは先日、仲間と共に南オーストラリア州で自転車に乗り、アデレードに向かって走っていたという。

やがて道の真ん中にコアラを発見。彼女と仲間はコアラを道路から移動させるために、自転車を止めたそうだ。

するとコアラは、Heuslerさんのもとへ歩いて接近。彼女がボトルの水を与えると、ゴクゴクと飲み始めたという。

その日は40℃近くまで気温が上昇していたが、コアラは相当喉が渇いていたとみられ、しまいには自転車に登り、しがみついて水を飲み続けたとか。

数千匹ものコアラが死亡か

オーストラリアではここ最近、記録的な熱波に襲われ、日中の最高平均気温が40℃にも達しているそうだ。

しかもこの熱波により、以前から続いていた山林火災も悪化しており、すでにイングランドの約3分の1の面積が焼失したと言われている。

そしてこの火災により、コアラの生息域の約30％も破壊され、特にニューサウスウェールズ州では、数千匹ものコアラが死んだのではないか、と危惧されているという。

ただしまだ火災が弱まっておらず、調査も行われていないため、正確な数字は分からないようだ。

またこのエリアではすでに1000軒以上の住宅が破壊され、9人の死者も出ていると伝えられている。（了）
