オーストラリアで非常に珍しい、ピンク色をしたマンタが目撃され、写真に収められた。

群れの中央に珍しいマンタを発見

そのマンタを撮影したのは、写真家であるKristian Laineさんだ。

彼は先日、グレート・バリア・リーフを潜っていた時に、7匹の群れの中央にピンク色をしたナンヨウマンタを目撃。

その様子を撮影し、写真を自らのインスタグラムに投稿した。するとたちまち注目を集めることに。

最初はストロボの影響かと思った

Kristianさんによれば、最初カメラのファインダー越しに見た時、1匹のマンタだけピンク色に見えたため奇妙に思ったという。

そして当初は、ストロボのいたずらによって、ピンク色に見えただけと考えていたそうだ。

しかしその後、Lady Elliot島で船に乗っていた時に、ピンク色のマンタの写真に遭遇。実際に存在することを知って、驚いたとか。

最初に目撃されたのは2015年

このピンク色のマンタは、2015年に初めて発見されて以来、これまで10回弱しか目撃されていなかったという。

この色は何らかの遺伝的変異により、皮膚のメラニン色素が影響を受け、人間のアルビノに似たプロセスを踏んだと考えられているそうだ。

そもそもナンヨウマンタは、黒もしくは白、そして2つが混じった色をしており、中でも最も多いのが黒と白が混じった模様だと言われている。

このためKristianさんは今回目撃したマンタに、映画『ピンクパンサー』の登場人物にちなみ、「クルーゾー警部」と名付けたという。（了）
