2月の中旬、アメリカの通りで、野生のアザラシの赤ちゃんが発見され、その後水族館に保護された。

その赤ちゃんが見つかったのは2月16日、場所はコネチカット州の町、ニューヘイブンとされている。

当時、ニューヘイブン警察は、街の通りにアザラシの赤ちゃんがいるとの信じ難い通報を受け、現場に急行したという。

すると実際、生後5～6 週間と思われるアザラシが、通りの交差点付近にいたそうだ。このため警察はミスティック水族館などの職員が到着するまで、アザラシを安全に保つよう努め、そのエリアを封鎖した。

前日にはビーチに戻されていたが…

実は、このアザラシの赤ちゃんが目撃されたのは、その日が初めてではない。

その前の週にも別の場所で目撃され、前日の15日にはミスティック水族館の職員が、ニューヘイブンの町にあるレストランの横で発見していたという。

その後、水族館の職員はアザラシの赤ちゃんを、安全なビーチに戻したが、16日には再び町に戻ってきてしまったそうだ。

現在、アザラシの赤ちゃんはミスティック水族館の保護下に置かれており、準備ができたら野生に戻される予定となっている。

水族館によると、少し痩せていたこのアザラシは、自分を傷つける可能性のある他のアザラシなどから逃げるといった、本能に従っていた可能性が高いという。（了）
